Cosmetic Dentistry: Definition, Types And Costs

Cosmetic dentistry is a specific area in professional oral care that focuses on the appearance of the mouth, teeth and smile. It, therefore, helps correct stained, discolored, broken, chipped or misaligned teeth. Cleaning and proper alignment of teeth in turn help restore one’s smile.

Cosmetic dentists carry out several procedures in a bid to improve the appearance of your smile. Before they can perform such procedures, they come up with a treatment plan depending on the cosmetic procedure the patient wants. There are several types of cosmetic dentistry, all of which involve different procedures and costs. Some of the most common types of cosmetic dentistry are highlighted below:

Teeth Whitening

It is probably the most common type of cosmetic dentistry. The procedure for teeth whitening can be the simplest and least expensive type of cosmetic dentistry. Teeth whitening can be done from a dentist’s office or from home. This procedure is mainly done to remove tartar, plaque and stains. Individuals can also buy a mold and gels to carry out the procedure from home. Whitening toothpaste, white strips and rinses are also used for this procedure. Such products may cost up to $100 while having a dentist in plantation to whiten your teeth may cost up to $500.

Dental Implants

Titanium is often used to form the tooth root during the replacement of a missing tooth with an artificial one. The titanium fuses with the healing jaw over time, forming a strong foundation for the replacement tooth. Though this procedure has also become common as a remedy for missing teeth, it is a costly one since it might cost up to $3,000.

Veneers

These are common with individuals who wish to change the color, size, length or shape of their teeth. These thin custom-made shells are made of porcelain or resin that is often colored and are fitted after removing a part of the tooth surface. They are then bonded or cemented to the tooth, and the result is giving a new look to an individual. Individuals seeking this procedure may have to part with up to $1,300 per tooth.

Crowns

These are caps that are fitted to replace decayed or damaged teeth. A dental crown is essential in restoring the appearance, size, shape and strength of a tooth and also helps prevent a weak tooth from breaking. Dental crowns are also used to hold a cracked tooth in position. They can also be used to cover discolored teeth, and each crown may cost up to $900.

Tooth Bonding

This is a procedure that is often used to correct discolored, broken or chipped teeth by using tooth-colored materials that are bonded to the defective tooth. Overall, it helps improve the appearance of the teeth.

Inlays And On lays

These are also called indirect fillings and are often made of porcelain, gold or composite materials. They are created in a dental lab and are used by a dentist to fill damaged or decayed teeth. Fillings are called “inlays” when the materials adhere from the center of a tooth and “on lays” when they cover the biting surface. These are alternatives to dental crowns and cost up to $1,200 per tooth.

Conclusion

Cosmetic dentistry deals with enhancing the appearance of the teeth, mouth and smile. Some of the types of cosmetic dentistry include teeth whitening, Invisalign treatment, dental crowns, implants and dental veneers.
