Science City, one of the finest and largest science museums in the world, is a top tourist attraction in Kolkata. It was inaugurated on 1st July, 1997, and is governed by the National Council of Science Museums. The Science City is Kolkata attracts a large number of visitors every day, and is especially popular among the kids and teenagers. It is located on the J.B.S Haldane Avenue.

One can view several interactive exhibits inside the premises of Science City. There are displays varying from early plant models to prehistoric robotic animals. Some of the most fun things at the centre include a Space Odyssey, Dynamotion, Evolution Park Theme Tour, Maritime Centre, Earth Exploration Hall, and other attractions. The place is a perfect blend of education with fun, presenting science and technology in a stimulating and engaging environment. A day out at the Science City is fun and enjoyable for people of all ages.

What’s even more exciting! Science City also has a recreational ropeway ride inside its premises. Where else in this urban city can you have the chance to ride a ropeway? Damodar Ropeways & Infra Limited (DRIL), one of the oldest ropeway construction companies in India, runs a cable car facility as an internal transport system. The DRIL ropeway inside Science City takes visitors from the point of entry to the far end of the park. This ropeway ride gives visitors a chance to enjoy an aerial view of the dome-shaped museum and nearby surroundings in the city.

Some of the best exhibitions at Science City are:

Science on a Sphere

“Science on a Sphere” is a first-of-its-kind exhibition in the eastern part of the country. Set up in a spherical-shaped room, the projection system uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a 1.80 meter diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Animated images of Earth’s land, oceans and atmosphere are displayed on the sphere, explaining complex processes, in a way that is simultaneously intuitive and captivating. It works as an education tool to help illustrate Earth’s dynamic processes and the associated science with it. This system gives a platform for better understanding of complex environmental processes.

Evolution of Life – A Dark Ride

This exhibition is divided into seven sections, each zone showcasing the milestone events of evolution of life and representative life forms of respective eras. In total, there are about 56 robotic animal models used in this showcase. Visitors are taken in a slow moving electric car to give them an immersive experience, supplemented by special light and sound effects. The visitors are introduced to each section through a special audio-video presentation created with the help of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).

Digital Panorama

This again, is a first-of-its-kind in the world. This exhibition portrays all the important milestones of the last 6 million years of human evolution. The show starts with a static panoramic image, showcasing important events of human evolution. Next is a 12 minutes dynamic film on human evolution with voiceover in 3 languages, projected on a giant cylindrical screen with the help of eight powerful digital projectors. The film features actual footage from South Africa and India merged with photorealistic computer generated 3D images.
